Let Your Appearance Speak

Let your Appearance Speak

You might not believe us when we say your bizarre sense of dressing style can cost you your job. But it does.

The one easy way of making an impression on your potential employees is by dressing your best when you are on interview. Forget jeans, sneakers, piercings, spiked hair, trousers down below your hips, rippled clothes and chewing gums.

Here are few dressing styles for men and women.

Women’s Interview Attire

* Solid color, conservative suit

* Coordinated blouse

* Moderate shoes

* Limited jewelry

* Neat, professional hairstyle

* Sparse make-up & perfume

* Manicured nails

* Portfolio or briefcase

Men’s Interview Attire

* Solid color, conservative suit

* White long sleeve shirt

* Conservative tie

* Dark socks, professional shoes

* Very limited jewelry

* Neat, professional hairstyle

* Go easy on the aftershave

* Neatly trimmed nails

* Portfolio or briefcase

What we want to imply here is that, candidates do not get the job because of what they wear for the interview but they sure damage their chances of success by dressing inappropriately. Use your knowledge of the profession to make the right judgment call on how you should dress for an interview.

Remember- the first judgment an interviewer makes is going to be based on what you are wearing.

Dress to Impress. Make not just a good impression; make a great one.

Preparing For An Interview contd…

In my previous article, I wrote about importance about preparing for the interview. Now, let us move to how you can actually prepare for the interview.

There are various things you need to consider while preparing for the interview. Let us look at each one of them.

  1. Do your research. It is very important to do some research on the company that you are going for an interview. Interviewers do expect that the person they are interviewing knows at least the basics of their company. You will be on a slippery ground if you don’t. Use the internet and website to know about the current information. Know the company’s market, products, goals and their competitors. Besides that, you need to understand what the job entails; its responsibilities and day-to-day activities.
  2. Know your way. Make sure that you know where the company is located or where the interview is going to take place. It is not acceptable for the interviewer (employer) to wait for you. Visit the company area one day prior and know where the office is, estimate how long it will take to reach the office from your home, know where the parking is or if there is no parking; the alternate to park your vehicle. Get the contact number of the office so that you can contact them in an account if you get lost. Save yourself time and unnecessary stress by knowing these things before heading to the interview.
  3. Consider your appearance. Always consider the way you dress for an interview. This is highly neglected by many people assuming this is nonsense. Dressing properly can go a long way in making an impression in an interview. Dress the way that shows your personality, probably a suit, because it is the second thing that makes an impact after your CV. Also, make sure to have a fresh haircut and clean, manicured nails.
  4. Mock interview. As I said in my earlier article, interview sessions can be a nerve-wrecking experience for many. Mock interview can significantly eliminate this nervousness. Prepare for the basic questions like: tell me about yourself, what have you been doing lately, what made you apply for the job, why should we pick you. Besides that, you could get some interview help or interview training and do some practice. Practice, practice and practice some more. To develop confidence you can try mock interview with your close friends and relatives. Ask them to ask you interview questions and comment on your response. This way you will definitely boost up your confidence!
  5. Prepare your references. Find at least two people from your academic, former supervisors, colleagues who willingly serve as your professional reference. Take their permission beforehand and make sure they speak highly of you when they are contacted by your potential employer.
  6. Arrival. Make sure you arrive early on the day of interview. Arriving for an interview in style, with confidence and a friendly manner will set the tone for the whole job interview, so work it to your advantage. Here’s what you can do:
      • Be friendly and polite to whoever greets you.

      • Thank the person for showing you to the interview room or waiting room

      • Smile and make eye contact with the interviewer

      • Offer your hand in greeting to all interviewers

      • Don’t sit down until you are invited to

      • When you are invited, take your time to get comfortable and compose yourself

      • If there is a desk, don’t lean on it!

      • Turn your cell phone off

  7. Bring necessary documents. Make a checklist of all the necessary documents that might be required, for instance, a copy of your resume, your identification card, your academic certificates, etc and make sure you have them in your briefcase before you leave your house.
  8. Ask questions. Many interviewees assume that it is not appropriate to ask questions to the interviewer. Contrary to this, interviewers do like when they are asked questions. But remember, questions about the job and the company that you have applied for.
    • Questions that you can ask:

What are my job responsibilities aside from those listed in the job advertisement?

What will be a typical work day be like?

Who will be my immediate superior?

What are your expectations of me?

Is there anything else that you would like to know about me?

Do you provide on-the-job training?

If selected, when would you like me to join?

    • Questions not to ask:

Have I got the job?

How much salary will I get?

How many vacations do I get in a year?

The main aim of the interviewer is to make sure that he has chosen the right person so it is your job to make him believe that he is not wasting his time on you and you are the right person and you can do the job.

Follow these guidelines and you will feel confident. Learn from your each interview and prepare for your next. Good Luck!
